We have capabilities for small or large jobs & our work is conducted at our factory in our dedicated spray areas.
Surface Preparation
The most important part of the job & 80% of paint failures can be attributed to surface preparation. We put in a big effort here, including removal of all oil residues from the surface & factory mill scale. Prior to painting, & between coats we will ensure all surfaces are cleaned with solvent to remove the last of the dust.
Here is a quick run-down:
Clean & round sharp edges plus any welding splatter.
Abrasive blast welds for good adhesion.
Apply acid (in some cases) to remove “mill scale”.
Rinse, wash & de-grease.
Low pressure water jet <5000 psi to remove excessive contaminants.
100% dry with compressed air & sun.
Surface preparation to ISO St2 / St3 standards using air / electric tools & abrasives.
Clean again with solvent to remove the last residues.
2. Paint Application
Now the fun part ! Correct application of paint requires experience & “know-how” for the best results. Our applicators & supervision are always utilizing the best methods for paint application. We are constantly improving their skills & knowledge though work based training. We have some great equipment to provide the best finishes for our customers.
Here is a quick run-down:
Consider the best paint selection or use the customers specifications.
For steel structure, we have a preference with industrial 2-pack epoxies for primers & high builds. Top coats have various options including (poly)urethane, enamels, acrylics & (poly)siloxanes. The general workflow is:
1st Coat – Primer Coat. Stripe coat corners & welds. The remaining area application is by spray gun.
Allow to cure as per manufacturers recommendations.
DFT (Dry Film Thickness) Test using Elcometer 456T gauge.
Sometimes (a touch up) 2 coats of primer is required.
2rd Coat – Top Coat. Is similar to above & we follow the basic procedure, checking DFT’s again & any additional touch ups to build the film thickness to the correct specification.
Allow to Hard dry to manufacturers recommendations before handling & moving to site. Sometimes, this is a 48 hour period.
